" It was November 4th, two days after the election. I was still in shock over George W. Bush winning a second term. I began mulling over ways I could cope with this cultural, political disaster, but outside of packing up and leaving the country, I couldn’t think of what to do.

I wanted to make a statement that expressed the disillusionment that I, and so many others, felt on Election Day. I wanted to show the republicans, and the rest of the world, that those of us who mobilized to ensure Bush would not win a second term have not disappeared, nor have we resigned ourselves to taking Bush’s reelection lying down. The anger, the emotion and the energy are still here ; they are just being channeled into creative, positive ideas.

And then it popped into my head. What if someone built a website or made a clock (or both) that counted down the time Bush had left in office, showing that a tangible end was in sight. Realistically nothing can speed up time, but it would certainly help to watch the days, hours, minutes and seconds disappear, knowing that when the clock read zero, we would be without G.W. (as president) forever...

While carrying a BackwardsBush key chain can’t change the reality that we are stuck with ‘four more years’, it is a small, portable symbol of our solidarity and a reminder that with each passing second, we are closer to a new president. It is also a vehicle for change, as a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to MoveOn.org, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing ordinary people back into politics.
